Lake Shikotsu is a caldera lake formed about 40,000 years ago by the eruption of Mount Shikotsu. The name is derived from the Ainu language, meaning "large depression," and has long been regarded as a precious water source for Chitose. The lake is 13 km long and 5 km wide, with a circumference of about 40 km, a maximum depth of about 360 m, and an average depth of about 265 m, making it the second deepest lake in Japan after Lake Tazawa in Akita Prefecture. Due to low nutrient levels and minimal plankton growth, the lake has very high transparency, having ranked first in water quality measurements by the Ministry of the Environment 20 times.
